Alright we’re going to take a little deTOUR here but stay with me because I think the punchline is important.

Who here watches the Tour De France? It’s the world’s largest and most premier bike race that spans 21 days with over 100 miles raced each day.

I’m into cycling so naturally I’ve been glued to the Tour De France the past two weeks. Great rivalries, massive mountain climbs, high speed attacks, and dangerous crashes. The current leader, Tadej Pogačar, is like the Michael Jordan of cycling so it’s quite a spectacle this year.

That’s all good and well, but I want to talk about the PELOTON. While “peloton” is often associated with the expensive stationary bike that is used to hold clothes and jackets in a spare bedroom, a real peloton is a group of cyclists riding in tight unison.

A peloton is basically a big ameba of cyclists that is going 25-35 mph.

Why do they do this?

The aerodynamic benefits are massive when riding in a peloton. A cyclist only needs to exert about 10-20% of the power to go the same speed in a peloton compared to if they were riding alone.

In plain english, that means it’s 90% easier to ride with a big pack than it is to go it alone.

It’s also a lot more fun. In the peloton, cyclists are often chatting, discussing tactics with their teammates, and passing around food & water to make sure they have fuel for the long haul.

So why am I telling you all this?

Building your startup is a lot like the Tour de France - tons of competition, moving at a lightning fast pace, resources and energy get depleted, and you have a lean team that is trying to achieve a massive win.

And this “peloton” concept is so similar to a startup community in my mind. It’s so much easier (and more fun) to build startups alongside other folks building startups.

We share resources.

We work together to pull the group along.

We share tactics and strategies.

There’s incredible power in the density of talent, networks, and ideas.

And like I mentioned, It’s a lot more fun to build along side other people that are pushing a high pace trying to do impossible things.

So, if you’re reading this feeling like a lone wolf and want to join a “peloton”, I really encourage you to come by one of our events or join our community. We got room for ya in this peloton, and would have you join us.

Hack Nights are Boomin’ (Now with Livestream)

Join us IRL next time if you’re a developer, engineer, designer, or product builder

If you’re a hacker (meaning a developer, engineer, designer, product builder, or really anyone who is actively building a technology project) then you should join us for our next Hack Night in partnership with Hello_Miami and INIT.

These bi-weekly hack nights run from 6:30pm until 1, 2, or even 3am in the morning. You need to register to attend and prove that you are actually going to be building technology. No freeloaders. If you attend hack night, you’re expected to build. 😃 

In a fun new twist - the hello_miami crew has started livestreaming our hack nights. In this first episode, you’ll hear from Anais from INIT and myself, as well as the hello_miami crew on what led them to create hack nights. Skip to 3:00 on the video above to dive right into the action.

Going forward, the livestream will be interviewing technical folks at hack night to share their projects, tech, and companies. It’s a fun, light vibe that’s easy listening for you get right in the mix of Miami’s technical talent scene.

Think of this like ESPN GameDay but for local tech. Pretty awesome.
